Lake View High School invites you to Join Northwestern University’s “Big Brains” for Family Brain Fair
Following a hugely successful, capacity-crowd event last year, NU is back for 2016 with a festival of all things “brain” – with complimentary first-come, first-served registration for families.
Nearly one hundred Northwestern University Neuroscience graduate students, undergrads, and post-docs will lead families through incredible hands-on experiments and demonstrations, including stations where a child can use their brain to control someone else’s arm, and attendees can see their actual brainwaves projected onto a large screen.
“Now in its sixth year, the Brain Fair has grown beyond the founder’s wildest dreams,” says Laura Shanahan, NU Brain Awareness Outreach Co-President, and a fourth year NU Neuroscience Ph.D. student. “Our first year, we had a handful of NU students and families – and now we’re bringing together hundreds of kids, parents and brain experts to get excited and learn about brain science.”
The Brain Fair is open to all families, and has been shaped for elementary and middle school age students – an age range that appeals to its volunteers. “I didn’t learn about Neuroscience until high school, even – and waiting until high school is way too late” says Natalie Frederick, NU Brain Awareness Outreach Co-President, and a fourth year NU Neuroscience Ph.D. student. “Getting kids inspired early is critical – and that mission is the driver for the huge growth in our yearly volunteer base, as well as the surging attendance.”

“This event is all part of our focus on STEM, and high-quality partnerships,” says LVHS principal Scott Grens. “Integrating some of the brightest university students in the country with our LVHS community in an engaging, hands-on environment is emblematic of the direction we’re taking LVHS.”
