Crime near us

Hi GWCA Neighbors,

The 19th District warned of home break-ins near our neighborhood between 8 pm and 6 am.  Entry is mostly through rear and side doors and windows.

Spring Crime Prevention Check-List

  • Do not install a privacy fence.  They create hiding places and give burglars added time to enter.  If you’re adding a fence, an artistic or traditional metal fence your neighbors and police can see through is best. If you add a wood fence, leave spacing between the slats.
  • Keep house and garage doors shut and locked.  If you’re gardening, lock your door and keep your keys and cell phone in your pocket.
  • Lock first and second floor windows.  If any windows are open for ventilation, make sure you have and use the ventilation locks that let the window open for ventilation, but not enough for entry.
  • Keep a bright front porch light on from dusk to dawn all year
  • Light your front porch so it makes for safe sidewalk passage.
  • Light your rear entry AND install at least one motion light in the back.
  • Report street and alley lights out immediately to 311.
  • Trim your shrubs so your neighbors and police can see your doors and windows.
  • Lock up ladders
  • Put your address on your garage.  If you don’t have a garage, put numbers on your rear porch so they can easily be seen from the alley.  These numbers will help speed response time to a fire or other emergency.  And it’s a Chicago law that your address be posted on your garage or in the rear
  • Have multiple interior lights on timers
  • Use curtains, shades, shutters or other window treatments so it isn’t possible to see into your home and for someone to see your valuables.
  • Keep all valuables out of sight.  Make your home a tough target, not an easy target
  • Maintain a phone tree of your neighbors on all four sides.
  • Call 911 and report any suspicious activity.  Please don’t be afraid to use your name.  It makes a difference.  Try to identify one or two things about the suspect.  Then call your phone tree; your neighbors on all four sides.
  • Report all crime.  Patterns are noticed earlier if all crime is reported.
  • Photo and inventory your belongings.  You can also engrave “IL + your drivers license number” on electronics.
  • Don’t put folded boxes from purchases out until trash day
  • Look out your windows from time to time and if you’re up at night.
  • If you have a dog, on walks, be observant and report any suspicious activity
  • Register bikes and keep them locked and in a locked garage or basement
  • Check the GWCA website for information; www.gracelandwest.org
  • Graceland West neighbors work together and you can see how your efforts pay off.  See http://www.trulia.com/local/60613/tiles:1%7Cpoints:1_crime
  • Look out for your neighbor and get to know more neighbors on all four sides in 2016
  • Thanks for being the best neighbors in Chicago!

GWCA residents have met LSC member Arnold Davis at meetings and events at GWCA and LVHS meetings, school clean-ups and events including the LVHS Architectural Tour led by Principal Scott Grens.  Arnold Davis is running for a second term.  Here is his candidate email:  “I am asking for your vote to re-elect me as a Community Representative to the Lake View High School Local School Council.

Two years ago, I said we were going to make Lake View a viable option for neighborhood high school students.  From installing one of the top administrations in CPS, to huge satisfaction gains in surveys of teachers and students, to creating a culture of respect and accomplishment, Lake View High School has gone from success to success in the last two years. Please take a moment to browse a list of Lake View’s many successes at the bottom of this e-mail.

I am proud of the work I have done, along with many talented members of the Lake View High School community, to make it happen. My colleagues on the Council elected me Vice Chair, an honor rarely given to the Community Representative.

Now I ask for your help. There are two community positions open on the Council, the organization that hires the Principal and sets the strategic direction for the school. There are four people running. Lake View is your school, and I need your vote so I can continue to help drive the incredibly positive momentum at Lake View.

Please come out and vote for me on Thursday, April 14th at Lake View High School, 4015 N. Ashland. Polls are open from 6am – 7 pm. The entrance is on Ashland, just north of Irving Park (door #6). Anyone who lives in the area outlined in the map below is eligible to vote. Voting will only take a few minutes of your time.
