GWCA 9th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup

The GWCA 9th annual volunteer street leaf cleanup is a very fun community event that gives us one last opportunity to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather and connect with our neighbors.  This effort helps keep our storm drains clear and reduces street, basement and vehicle flooding.  Let’s break last year’s record of 483 full bags!

Bagged leaves can be left on parkways for pickup after November 14th.  Share your photos on Facebook @Graceland West Community Association, on Instagram @graceland_west_gwca or by emailing info@gracelandwest.org to enter to win the GOLDEN RAKE AWARD which can be proudly displayed as a Graceland West badge of honor and defended when the leaves fall next year.

Come join us at the pumpkin smash on Saturday, November 6th to pick up a leaf bag for your Graceland West street leaves.

Gratitude – 8th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup

WOW!  What a fantastic neighborhood effort!  This, our largest annual volunteer effort, broke all records.  Hundreds of neighbors raked and bagged 483 bags of street and crosswalk leaves with some sidewalk and parkway leaves included.  Thank you to all who volunteered including the GWCA Council Members, Street Leaf Cleanup Committee and Block Reps who led this effort and the crew from Aramark at Lake View High School.  If you have photos, feel free to share on Facebook and Instagram @graceland_west_gwca.

This effort will help reduce street flooding, make neighborhood walking less slippery for all and make shoveling snow for parking spaces easier.

It’s time for GWCA’s 8th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup! (November 7-15th)

Our final 2020 neighborhood street sweeping was September 29/30. Leaves are falling now. Please join us in raking up and bagging street and crosswalk leaves from November 7-15th. It’s important that we keep leaves out of the street so that they don’t clog sewer drains and cause flooding, or decompose over the winter and turn into a muddy mess.

It’s easy! Just grab a rake and some bags (and a mask!), and leave your bagged leaves on the parkway. GWCA will organize a special pickup from the city the following week–no need to drag the bags to your alley and file a 311 request!

  • We’re focused on street leaves, but we’re also hoping to get any remaining debris from the big summer storm.
  • Paper or plastic bags are fine. Just don’t make them too heavy to lift! A shovel or a dustpan can be helpful for scooping leaves and filling bags.
  • Because of COVID-19, we won’t be working in large non-household groups this year.
  • In your yard, it’s good to leave at least some leaves and plant matter, so that beneficial insects have a place to spend the winter. But we want to get all of the leaves out of the street and sidewalks.
  • Take pictures of your work and post to our Facebook page #GWCAVolunteers and spread the word! We’ve got a lot of streets to cover 🙂

Frozen leaves become icy making it difficult to shovel around cars and making streets and sidewalk crossings hazardous. Chip in to make the community safer for everyone.

It’s easy! Just grab a rake and some bags (and a mask!), and leave your bagged leaves on the parkway. GWCA will organize a special pickup from the city the following week–no need to drag the bags to your alley and file a 311 request!
