9th Annual Street Leaf Cleanup

The GWCA 9th annual volunteer street leaf cleanup is a very fun community event that gives us one last opportunity to enjoy the beautiful autumn weather and connect with our neighbors. Starting on Tuesday 11/9 which is after the final street sweep and culminating on Sunday 11/14, this effort helps keep our storm drains clear and reduces street, basement and vehicle flooding.  Let’s break last year’s record of 483 full bags!

BLOCK REPS NEEDED

 

GRACELAND WEST COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION “GWCA” 11-13-14:

If you live between Montrose, Irving Park, Clark and Ashland, you live in Graceland West, the northernmost portion of Lake View and your neighborhood association is GWCA. We were established in the late ‘70s. We all have many NEW NEIGHBORS and want all to sign up on https://nextdoor.com (“Nextdoor”), which is also an app and can be accessed anywhere. Additionally, “Everyblock” is another great site where you can register and connect with neighbors about the goings on in Graceland West; http://www.everyblock.com.

We typically have several Block Reps on each side of each block. But some people have had job transfers or retired and subsequently moved so WE NEED YOU to VOLUNTEER to be a BLOCK REP. This is a great way to meet your neighbors and get involved. I’m one of nine current GWCA Council Members and in charge of BLOCK REPS. GWCA Requests Residents Complete 47th Ward Aldermanic Block Audit By November 25 (Deadline)

Each year, every ward is allocated $1.32 million in aldermanic menu funds to pay for infrastructure improvements. The 47th Ward’s aldermanic menu dollars have been spent for this year, and a full report on last year’s process and results is available on the 47th ward website.  It’s now time to begin the process for the 2015 Aldermanic Menu Program.

We give everyone the opportunity to complete an audit of their block. This audit is the first step in our menu process, and provides our office with information on which improvements are needed in particular areas. If you, or someone you know, would like to complete this on paper they can pick up a copy from the 47th Ward Office at 4243 N Lincoln Avenue.  We will be accepting completed audits until midnight on November 25, 2014.

The deadline for completion is November 25.  The 47th Ward Team will then score the audits in December and January, and we will hold our annual vote for menu spending in February or March of 2015.  We expect the menu submission for 2015 to be ready for submission to the City by April.

WARNER PARK TAKES IMMEDIATE ACTION FOLLOWING GUN SHOTS AND ARRESTS

GWCA has been following all the conversations trending on Everyblock (www.everyblock.com) and Nextdoor (www.nextdoor.com) websites, as well as inquiries through the GWCA website, since the gunshots occurred in Warner Park recently. One of our GWCA council members contacted a Warner Park representative and she updated us on the changes they are making in the Park which are discussed below:

A newly Installed Mercury halogen lamp was mounted on the high post near the garage. This will illuminate the back part of the yard and gazebo and will run 24/7 during the winter.  The benches located on the west side closest to the garage have been removed. This should help dissuade loitering.  The benches will be installed in a new location in the spring.

The area has been cleared of any high standing shrubbery, including the larger blue spruce, to improve the view from Warner to the alley and eliminate niches. Removing the gazebo is under consideration and might be done if this problem persists. For the moment though the gazebo will stand. The gazebo is lighted.

GWCA believes Warner Park has taken all necessary action regarding suggestions from the Alderman’s office and police department.  Some have also suggested that the garden be fenced but Warner Park representatives believe that would be counter to the intention and purpose of the park. GWCA plans to discuss, at its next meeting, making a contribution to Warner Park to help offset some of these security-related costs.
