Remembering Mark Riehle: A Pillar of Graceland West

Mark Riehle - GWCAFest 2015

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Mark Riehle, a longtime neighbor, business partner, and devoted supporter of the Graceland West community. Mark passed away peacefully early Sunday morning at the age of 66, following a courageous battle with heart disease and brain injury.

To many, Mark was the face of the beloved Ranalli’s on Montrose. His restaurant wasn’t just a local business; it was a neighborhood staple where many of us shared meals and memories. Whether we were enjoying his famous quick delivery or stopping in for a slice, Mark always made his customers feel like family.

Beyond the restaurant, Mark’s dedication to our community truly shined at GWCAFest. For many years, he was the engine behind the food tent, tirelessly organizing and serving the neighborhood he loved. Most will remember Mark not just for the food he provided, but for his infectious warmth and generous spirit. He cared deeply for Graceland West and its residents, a devotion he proved time and again through his friendship and service.

Mark was a true friend to this neighborhood, and he will be profoundly missed. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.

May he rest in peace.

The cicadas are coming

GWCA is wondering if we have any professional or hobby entomologists in the neighborhood. Please connect with us at info@gracelandwest.org.

This May and June, the Northern Illinois Brood, or Brood XIII and the Great Southern Brood, Brood XIX will both be out in force in the greater Chicago area. “The world hasn’t seen cicadas like this since 1803“, but according to our friends at Illinois Extension (see attachment) “besides the noise, which may be substantial, this large group of insects is harmless and can be appreciated and enjoyed by nature lovers of all ages.”

47th Ward Youth Council – Tech Donations for CPS Students

Have a donation? Click here: http://bit.ly/back2school47

From Gabriel Perez, on behalf of the 47th Ward’s Youth Council:

We are calling for donations of new or used laptops, tablets, computer mouse, and/or money. All donations will benefit kids throughout the city who currently do not have the necessary resources for remote learning this fall. This effort was initiated in the presence of an already existing great digital divide that was compounded by mandated district wide remote learning due to COVID.

Dinner at 6 in the park.

We have twenty nine gardens so far, our goal is 35, it’s best to have a least three gardens per street to get the best attendance down those streets. If you wish to only display your front garden, that is a very popular way of participating.
