From the 47th Ward: Hutchinson/Greenview Water Main Project

We’re forwarding the following update from the 47th Ward Office for those who may not have received it directly.

The Department of Water Management is starting work replacing 1,300 of water main beneath Hutchinson (Greenview to Clark) and Greenview (Berteau to Cullom). The water main is the large pipe that runs along the street and brings water to each building’s individual service line. The existing water main dates back to the 1890s. This project will be an opportunity for DWM to replace the water main, replace any existing lead service lines connecting to it, and fully repave all three blocks once the project is complete. This project was identified over the years based on the age of the main and the history of breaks and leaks impacting it.

Start Date: Crews will start moving equipment to the area this week, with digging beginning next week.

Expected Duration of Project: 3 months (July completion), followed by asphalt and concrete restoration.

Parking impacts: 7am-3:30pm on weekdays – no access to or parking on the street. Parking will be available at all other times. Crews will work to accommodate special deliveries, disabled residents, etc.

Water Shutoffs: Crews will strive to provide 5 days’ notice ahead of any scheduled service interruptions. Some emergency repairs may take place (old pipes tend to crack as they are being worked on). These service interruptions are not expected to impacted buildings that are not on the directly impacted blocks.

Water Main Replacement Process: Two separate crews will trench to install a new water main a few feet from the old one. They will work:

  • On Hutchinson: Starting at Clark, working west.
  • On Greenview: Starting at Cullom, working south.

Throughout the whole project DWM will aim to be minimally invasive, using trenchless technology and working around existing trees wherever possible.

Best,

Joshua Mark

Voting closes Tuesday: 47th Ward participatory budgeting

Participatory budgeting in the 47th Ward is underway, with voting closing soon! Residents and students aged 14 and older who live or attend school in the ward are encouraged to participate. To cast your vote until Tuesday, January 21st, complete the short registration form on Alderman Martin’s website. After verification, you’ll receive an email with a link to your ballot. This year’s proposed projects include:

  • Accessible Pedestrian Signals at Ashland and Winnemac: Installing auditory cues and pedestrian countdown signals to enhance safety for visually impaired neighbors, especially considering the nearby Thorek Retirement Community.
  • Accessible Pedestrian Signals at Damen and Lawrence: Similar installations at this intersection to support accessibility, particularly for seniors from the nearby Levy Senior Center.
  • Speed Feedback Signals near Schools: Placing speed feedback signs on major streets adjacent to Lane Tech, Lake View, Coonley, and St. Ben’s schools to improve student safety.
  • Public Art Sculptures: Funding the temporary installation of two sculptures in each of the 47th Ward’s five neighborhoods, promoting local art and community engagement.

Participatory budgeting allows community members to directly influence how infrastructure funds are allocated, fostering transparency and inclusivity. In previous years, residents have funded projects like new murals, bike lanes, water fountains, tree plantings, and pickleball courts.

Don’t miss this opportunity to have your say in improving our community!

Upcoming Roadwork: Cullom Avenue Resurfacing Starts Week of 11/18

We received this update from the 47th Ward Office regarding the resurfacing work on Cullom Avenue, shared by Josh Mark:

“As you have likely seen, CDOT has begun the much-needed work of repaving Cullom between Greenview and Clark. While our office has been pushing them hard to ensure that this work took place this year, I’m afraid CDOT did not give us a heads up that they would be starting now, so I apologize for not being able to warn neighbors ahead of time. Please note that CDOT currently aims to pave the surface layer of asphalt on the street at the start of the week of 11/18 (weather permitting). Until then, utility companies will be working to repair and adjust existing utility structures on the block”.

From the Alderman’s Office – #9 Ashland Bus Extension

Below is an important update from the Alderman’s office about the Ashland #9 Bus extension. If missed the June 6th meeting hosted by the 47th Ward notes from the GWCA Council can be found here. The feedback form from the Alderman’s office is still open if you have comments. It can be found here.

Alderman Martin is excited to share that the CTA has set the start of the extended #9 Ashland bus route to its new terminal at the Ravenswood Metra Station for Tuesday 9/3.

After hearing concerns from neighbors about the integrity of the street, CDOT has identified problem areas where they will grind and patch the street with new asphalt before buses begin running along it. CDOT has informed us that they intend to start that work next week.

In preparation for the September start date, the CTA will be working to install new bus stop signage along the route later this month.

This extension will expand access to one of the busiest bus routes in the city to within ½ mile of an estimated 21,000 additional residents and 15,000 more jobs. The extended route will also provide direct connections to the Metra, the #78 Montrose bus, and the #81 Lawrence bus.
