GWCA & LVHS launch leaf cleanup by filling 150 bags

GWCA’s 4th Annual Street Leaf Cleanup was Saturday.  27 LVHS students partnered with us (and will receive Community Service hours).  Together we filled over 150 bags with street leaves.

Update:  Please keep raking and bagging street leaves.  Street leaves from side streets and Greenview move downhill with rain or snowmelt and obstruct cleaned sewer grates. Clogged grates cause flooding and allow wet, slippery leaves to build up. Once temperatures drop, icy surfaces develop. As a result of sudden high water, some cars on Greenview are totaled every year.  Additionally, due to slick leaves and icy surfaces, some of our GWCA neighbors have fallen on sidewalks and streets, a few even suffering a broken bone.  Leaves also provide rat habitat.  About 1/3 of leaves are still on trees following our November 12th Street Leaf Cleanup.

What can I do?

  • Encourage neighbors to help on your block
  • Continue to cleanup street leaves and if you use a landscaper, please remind them to clean street leaves too
  • Keep sidewalks, parkways, alleys and under garbage cans and dumpsters clear of leaves too
  • Help neighbors on the corner keep crosswalks and sewer drains clear
  • Don’t park with tires obstructing a sewer drain
  • Call 311 if there is standing water for more than 12 hours

Mosquito Abatement Spraying Tomorrow, 8/24

We have received notice from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) about an upcoming mosquito abatement spraying that will be done in part of the 47th Ward, tomorrow, August 24. The area to be sprayed is north of Graceland West.
2016 spraying area

CDPH is continuing its efforts against West Nile virus. Based on results from its citywide mosquito surveillance program, CDPH has determined the need to spray to kill adult mosquitoes this week. Spraying will occur in parts of Rogers Park, West Ridge, Edgewater and Lincoln Square on the North Side (detailed map is below). Last week, CDPH received a report of the first case of West Nile Virus in Chicago resident. The individual, who is elderly, has since recovered.

The material being used to control the adult mosquitoes, Zenivex™, is approved for use by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and has been widely applied to control mosquitoes in outdoor residential and recreational areas across the city. The spray will be applied by licensed mosquito abatement technicians from Vector Disease Control International, a leader in the mosquito control industry. Guiding the crews through the streets will be supervisors from the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation.

While the spray is not harmful to people or pets and is routinely sprayed in residential areas across the nation, residents of targeted neighborhoods may choose to stay indoors and close their windows while spraying is underway, as an extra precaution.

In addition to the city’s aggressive mosquito abatement and prevention efforts, CDPH continues to remind residents to take simple precautions to protect themselves against mosquitoes that may carry the virus, including:

  • Use insect repellent that contains DEET, Picaridin or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus.
  • Eliminate standing water. This includes emptying water from flowerpots, gutters, pool covers, pet water dishes and birdbaths regularly.
  • Keep grass and weeds short to eliminate hiding places for adult mosquitoes.
  • When outside between dusk and dawn, wear loose-fitting, light colored clothing including long pants, long sleeve shirts, socks and shoes.
  • Check that all screens, windows and doors are tight-fitting and free of holes and tears.
  • Check on neighbors regularly who may need additional assistance, including the elderly.
