MWRD asks residents to plan and act to help prevent snow-melt flooding

MWRD advises municipalities, residents to prevent winter flooding through proper planning
With temperatures warming up after record-breaking cold the past few days, snowmelt and rain can lead to flooding in the Chicagoland region

Frozen ground is unable to absorb water and snow, and run-off immediately flows to the sewers. In addition, ice can block storm drains and streams. As a result, flooding may occur when the sewer system becomes overwhelmed from the combination of normal sewage flow, rain water and snow melt.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is preparing for the flow by lowering water levels in the Chicago Area Waterway System to make room for runoff. In addition, our Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) tunnels, Majewski Reservoir, Thornton Composite Reservoir, and McCook Reservoir Stage I are ready to hold over 11 billion gallons of water.

Municipalities as well as the public can help plan for and minimize flooding by reducing water use. Postponing high water consumption activities such as bathing or showering, running dishwashers or washing clothes will also help provide maximum capacity in the local and intercepting sewer systems.

Other activities that can help minimize flooding include:
• Make sure storm drains are clear and not buried under snow drifts.

• Keep areas around streams free of floatable debris.
• If your home has a backwater valve installed on the sewer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning to ensure that it is functioning properly.
• Check your sump pump to make sure it is working properly.
• If your home or area is prone to flooding you may want to remove valuable items from basement floors.
• Keep your gutters clear. When they are blocked, water will pour over the edges, landing on the ground next to your home. If you have cracks in the concrete wall of your basement or problems with your tile, this water could enter your home.
If you see flooding, report it to your municipality; in Chicago, call 311.

Winter weather warning, please check on neighbors

We hope everyone is warm and safe.

Please check on your neighbors, especially seniors or anyone you know who is disabled.

If you see someone isn’t shoveled, please help out if you’re able.

GWCA’s motto is “Lights On” dusk to dawn. A bright porch light that illuminates the sidewalk helps pedestrians be more surefooted and helps deter crime to pedestrians and vehicles. A bright rear entry light is essential too. Shoveled walks indicate residents are home and is essential to low neighborhood crime. And video is great to have.

Coyote benefits and cautions

There has not been a single coyote bite or attack in Northeastern Illinois.

Caution: If you see a neighborhood coyote, please stay safe and keep the coyote safe. Do rattle something or make noise. Don’t approach closer or haze them. Respect the coyote’s space and give them additional space. Don’t run from them. Never feed a coyote or leave ANY food outside. Keep pets on leashes. Don’t leave small children alone outdoors.

Coyotes are both predators and scavengers, eating small and medium size rodents, Canadian geese, rabbits, deer, fruits and more. They are especially helpful regarding needed neighborhood rat abatement and we have rats that exceed 10 lbs.

Since 2000, most Chicago coyotes have received tracking devises or microchips from the Urban Coyote Research Project: https://urbancoyoteresearch.com/. Here’s a news 2017 report from WTTW: https://news.wttw.com/2017/12/27/why-are-coyotes-thriving-chicago-area

Last, remember “Lights On, Dusk to Dawn”. Always maintain a bright front porch light and a rear entry light. Winter Solstice is Friday (the shortest daylight of the year).

Aldermanic Menu Projects approved in 2018

From Alderman Pawar. Dear Neighbor,

As the year comes to a close, I would like to provide a summary of the 2018 Aldermanic Menu Program projects that were selected and authorized by my office. Each year, aldermen are provided $1.32 million to spend on infrastructure and other projects in their ward.
