DESCRIPTION:It’s time for GWCA’s 8 th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup! (November 7-15th) \nOur final 2020 neighborhood street sweeping was September 29/30. Leaves are falling now. Please join us in raking up and bagging street and crosswalk leaves from November 7-15th. It’s important that we keep leaves out of the street so that they don’t clog sewer drains and cause flooding\, or decompose over the winter and turn into a muddy mess. Frozen leaves become icy making it difficult to shovel around cars and making streets and sidewalk crossings hazardous. Chip in to make the community safer for everyone. \nIt’s easy! Just grab a rake and some bags (and a mask!)\, and leave your bagged leaves on the parkway. GWCA will organize a special pickup from the city the following week–no need to drag the bags to your alley and file a 311 request! \n\nWe’re focused on street leaves\, but we’re also hoping to get any remaining debris from the big summer storm.\nPaper or plastic bags are fine. Just don’t make them too heavy to lift! A shovel or a dustpan can be helpful for scooping leaves and filling bags.\nBecause of COVID-19\, we won’t be working in large non-household groups this year.\nIn your yard\, it’s good to leave at least some leaves and plant matter\, so that beneficial insects have a place to spend the winter. But we want to get all of the leaves out of the street and sidewalks.\nLet’s have fun and share photos of raking on GWCA’s Facebook and Instagram!

Both of these plantings provide bird\, bat\, rusty patched bumblebee (endangered)\, butterfly and beneficial insect habitat AND each absorbs about 2\,000 gallons of stormwater annually.   \nAs a 40th Anniversary member thank you\, we’ll give a pollinator plant to attending GWCA member households and new member households (though supplies are limited). DESCRIPTION:GWCA\, the Graceland West Community Association\, will be 40 years old in 2019.  GWCA has an ECO / environmental committee. The Filipino American Council of Greater Chicago\, Rizal Community Center\, our newest GWCA ECO Partner and has installed a fantastic Community Beautification and Environmental Project.  Please attend the ribbon cutting to celebrate the addition of native plants for bird\, bat\, bee\, butterfly and beneficial insect habitat.  The project will help also absorb stormwater where it falls and help with urban stormwater flooding.  Rizal has also installed one green roof panel\, which we hope will seed more green roofs along Irving Park and throughout our neighborhoods. \n
