Based on multiple GWCA surveys, 5:30 pm on Sunday was selected by GWCA members and Graceland West neighbors as a their first choice day and time for GWCA meeting and get-togethers’ as families with children could bring infants and children of all ages and attend as a family, road warriors could attend and still make a 6 am Monday flight and employees who often didn’t get home on weekdays until 7:30 could attend. 1) GWCA 8th Annual Street Leaf Cleanup Update: Please leave bagged street leaves on your parkway by 3 pm, today, Sunday, November 17, for our special annual city pickup tomorrow for composting. A small group of hardy GWCA Council Members, Block Reps and neighbors worked for two hours yesterday on the Belle Plaine and Greenview and Cuyler and Greenview intersections and cleared ice from sewer grates, crosswalks, the street and shoveled ice from sidewalks. Other neighbors did the same on their streets. Thank you to all who could help. Please help keep sidewalk and street leaves up to make for safer walking and less flooding.

2) GWCA and NNA both have ECO / Green Committees and are jointly sponsoring a Green Forum on Nov 19, 7 pm at Rizal, 1332 W Irving Park. Free Parking. The Forum will include discussion of the Illinois Clean Energy Jobs Act, Chicago Recycling, and the WasteShed, an innovative Chicago program that utilizes recycled materials. Speakers: State Representative Ann Williams, Mike Nowak, Radio Host and Chicago Recycling Coalition, Eleanor Ray, Executive Director, The WasteShed.

3) GWCA will have it’s Annual Holiday Potluck, short family friendly meeting w semi-annual elections in December, and we’ll let you know when the date and location are set.

Are you a renter, condo, home or business owner? If so, we need your help.

Please meet at the Greenview corner nearest your home or business. Bring 10 leaf bags and a rake or dust pan (yes it sounds crazy, but dustpans are great leaf scoops). You and other neighbors will clean up street, intersection and crosswalk leaves and clear the leaves from sewer grates.

Why??? Your work makes for safer winter walking and eliminates lots of leaves which desire only to clog sewers and contribute to street, vehicle and basement flooding. Your efforts make a big difference. Bring your family and neighbors and have fun. From October 10 through 17 you can leave bagged leaves on your parkway and not haul them all the way to the alley because the city does a special bagged leaf pickup to thank you for your effort.

GWCA (the Graceland West Community Association) and SNA, (the Southport Neighbors Association) are holding a joint community meeting on Monday, October 21, 7-8 pm at the Mercury Theater, 3745 N. Southport.

We’ll see and vote on a new business and tavern license proposal for a possible business in the 1400 block of Irving Park. GWCA members who live in the neighborhood (or are designated voters for GWCA non-profit, school or business members) and who are current and were members by September 21 (30 days prior) are eligible to vote. If your membership lapsed, don’t despair, instead, please join now so you can vote at an upcoming meeting.

Resurfacing will be between Waveland and Southport.

Work is tentatively scheduled to occur between Oct 21 and Dec 6…dependent on weather and other conditions.

^ Saturday, November 16, 9-11 am, Meet at the Greenview corner closest to your house to help clean up street leaves that fall after the last annual city street cleaning. Please bring your family, some neighbors a rake or dust pan (to scoop leaves) for each volunteer and 10 leaf bags. This effort helps reduce stormwater and snowmelt

We hope you’ll join and support GWCA if you’re not yet a member. GWCA is YOUR Community organization and all leaders and committee members are volunteers. Leaders work with the city, alderman’s office and police regarding a multitude of neighborhood needs and issues, have active committees on climate change, stormwater flooding, neighborhood safety (from air quality to crime prevention) and events, work on community building, neighborhood infrastructure and neighborhood identity. Nominal Membership dues provide for our website, newsletters, news kiosks, some event costs and an annual donation to Warner Park and Gardens – some of you might remember or helped to found the GWCA park, which is now the east 25′ of Warner Park and Gardens. We have also been able to fund a scholarship to Lake View High School for four of the past five years. GWCA Members are able to vote on issues and for leaders after 30 days as long as they are also current members on the day of the vote.
