Gratitude – 8th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup

WOW!  What a fantastic neighborhood effort!  This, our largest annual volunteer effort, broke all records.  Hundreds of neighbors raked and bagged 483 bags of street and crosswalk leaves with some sidewalk and parkway leaves included.  Thank you to all who volunteered including the GWCA Council Members, Street Leaf Cleanup Committee and Block Reps who led this effort and the crew from Aramark at Lake View High School.  If you have photos, feel free to share on Facebook and Instagram @graceland_west_gwca.

This effort will help reduce street flooding, make neighborhood walking less slippery for all and make shoveling snow for parking spaces easier.

Streets and Sanitation picked up bagged leaves from parkways on Tuesday, Nov 17. If you’ve still got leaves to bag, please call 311 or Alderman Martin’s office for a special bagged pickup. As a reminder, it is illegal to rake or blow leaves into the street and you may be fined for violating city ordinance according to Sec. 10-8-480, which covers anything being littered in the public way. If you see a landscaping company or resident raking/blowing leaves into the street, you may alert Alderman Martin’s office.

From the Alderman’s Office – Irving Park Resurfacing

Please see below information regarding the planned resurfacing of Irving Park from Ravenswood west. Although it is disappointing that the work was pushed to 2021, we are excited about the opportunity to work with CDOT to increase pedestrian safety wherever the State will allow.

GWCA Fall 2020 News

GWCA Fall 2020 News

It’s time for GWCA’s 8th Annual Volunteer Street Leaf Cleanup! (November 7-15th)

Our final 2020 neighborhood street sweeping was September 29/30. Leaves are falling now. Please join us in raking up and bagging street and crosswalk leaves from November 7-15th. It’s important that we keep leaves out of the street so that they don’t clog sewer drains and cause flooding, or decompose over the winter and turn into a muddy mess.

It’s easy! Just grab a rake and some bags (and a mask!), and leave your bagged leaves on the parkway. GWCA will organize a special pickup from the city the following week–no need to drag the bags to your alley and file a 311 request!

  • We’re focused on street leaves, but we’re also hoping to get any remaining debris from the big summer storm.
  • Paper or plastic bags are fine. Just don’t make them too heavy to lift! A shovel or a dustpan can be helpful for scooping leaves and filling bags.
  • Because of COVID-19, we won’t be working in large non-household groups this year.
  • In your yard, it’s good to leave at least some leaves and plant matter, so that beneficial insects have a place to spend the winter. But we want to get all of the leaves out of the street and sidewalks.
  • Take pictures of your work and post to our Facebook page #GWCAVolunteers and spread the word! We’ve got a lot of streets to cover 🙂

47th Ward Youth Council – Tech Donations for CPS Students

Have a donation? Click here: http://bit.ly/back2school47

From Gabriel Perez, on behalf of the 47th Ward’s Youth Council:

We are calling for donations of new or used laptops, tablets, computer mouse, and/or money. All donations will benefit kids throughout the city who currently do not have the necessary resources for remote learning this fall. This effort was initiated in the presence of an already existing great digital divide that was compounded by mandated district wide remote learning due to COVID.
