Demonstration Native Plant Parkway Corner installed for flooding

A demonstration Native Plant parkway corner was installed at the SW Corner of Belle Plaine and Greenview.  Native plants selected will provide bird, and butterfly habitat.  These long-root native plants, along with more permeable soil will absorb about 2,000 gallons of stormwater annually.  Soil was amended 9″ deep (sand, soil, peat moss, clay and compost were incorporated) for maximum permeability.  GWCA is encouraging all neighbors to add another 100 sq. ft. of permeable space (for a typical 25′ x 125′ city lot) to capture stormwater where it falls to help prevent stormwater runoff, standing water (which can attract mosquitos) and vehicle, street and basement flooding.

Native Plant Demonstration Parkway Corner

The GWCA ECO Committee, a partnership with the Graceland West Community Association, Lake View High School and Warner Park and Gardens is planting a Native Plant Demonstration Parkway Corner at the S/W corner of Belle Plaine and Greenview.  The purpose is to provide bird, pollinator (bee and butterfly) and beneficial insect habitat and help reduce Stormwater Runoff.

More information about how you can plant long rooted plant native plants in your yard to help reduce neighborhood stormwater runoff, standing water and flooding will be provided at the LVHS Campus and Community Park during GWCA’s 34th Garden Walk on Sunday, August 7 from noon – 5 pm.  We hope you’ll invite some friends, family or co-workers to join you as neighbors share their gardens.
