GWCA establishes scholarship for 2016 LVHS graduating senior

FYI, GWCA Members, here’s the application. This scholarship is for $1,000 to a 2016 graduate. We’d like to make it $2,000. Can you get your neighbors to join GWCA. Just email l.gillman@sbcglobal.net for a GWCA membership application.

Graceland West Community Association (“GWCA”) was established 1979 as the community association for the Graceland West Neighborhood where Lake View High School is located. The boundaries of GWCA are Montrose, Irving, Clark and Ashland.

The purposes of GWCA: Encourage a sense of community and develop a neighborhood spirit. Provide an open forum to discuss community matters and their resolution. Provide a united effort in the securing of city and neighborhood services. Develop and preserve an appreciation for the historical significance of the area. Encourage preservation, restoration, and beautification of the neighborhood. Promote an appreciation of the cultural diversity of the neighborhood. Establish a means to provide for the welfare of the community.

Scholarship Criteria:
1. Current Lake View High School Student with a GPA of at least 3.0
2. Must qualify for free/reduced lunch
3. Must provide leadership for the betterment of the community in ways that reflect GWCA’s purpose. Community can be defined as Lake View High School, your neighborhood, the GWCA neighborhood, Chicago, the country or world.

4. Must prepare and submit a brief written reflection on the student’s community leadership and how it betters his/her community. (Reflection Questions will be forthcoming).
5. Must accumulate 4 or more service learning hours from participation in at least ONE of the neighborhood events sponsored by GWCA:
a. GWCAFest, the annual block party for the entire neighborhood
b. GWCA Halloween Party
c. GWCA Leaf Cleanup, which helps reduce neighborhood stormwater flooding
d. Any upcoming GWCA-sponsored events
6. Must prepare and submit a brief written reflection on the importance of the service they provided for any of the GWCA-sponsored events (Reflection Questions will be forthcoming)
