Prevent Street and Basement Flooding

Wherever you or I live in the neighborhood, we are uphill from a neighbor and downhill from another.  We’ve had our final city annual leaf clean-up.  Saturday nine neighbors, a teacher from Lake View and three students worked in cold and wet snow between storms to clean up your leaves to prevent street flooding.  To those volunteers and those in the neighborhood who have all their sidewalk, parkway and street leaves up, we THANK YOU!!.  To those who still need to do this, or have more leaves falling, leaves on your sidewalk, parkway or in your street will make their way lower and clog sewer drains.  This causes your neighbors basements to flood or your car to flood and be totaled.  Whether you rent, own a condo or own a home, street leaves are the responsibility of all of us.  Please get street, sidewalk and parkway leaves up before Thanksgiving.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving is a terrible time to volunteer.  But it’s a good clean-up date as leaves are usually down and it’s weeks after the last street cleaning.  We tried the cleanup two weeks after Thanksgiving the first year and it was 19 degrees with sleet.  We’re asking you to keep your leaves up now and put this on your calendar for 2016.  The Saturday before Thanksgiving.  From 9-11 am.

The Graceland West Neighborhood has 1,200 homes and about 3,500 residents.  We hand delivered fliers to all asking for volunteers to help clean-up leaves to prevent flooding. Thirteen children and adults ranging in age from 10 to 71 worked on Saturday to help prevent flooding that impacts 3,500.

We work AND play.  We tackle neighborhood issues and then have neighborhood parties.  We had fun getting street leaves up today, but it would have been more fun if you’d joined us.  We know the intersections we worked on will be safe for walking, that we’ve saved some cars from flooding and made it safer for parents, children, commuters and seniors to traverse some intersections.  We hope everyone will do the same this week and keep their sidewalks, crosswalks and streets free of leaves.

And we hope you’ll get involved with YOUR Neighborhood Association.  Bring a dish and come to the GWCA holiday potluck and meeting on Thursday, December 3rd, 6:30 pm, Lake View HS Social Room, entrance # 6 on Ashland.  There is a parking lot south of the running track”.
